Key Stage 3 Workshops

Medieval Life

The children will investigate the different people who lived in a castle such as the Lord and Lady and the Servants. They will try on different costumes worn by these different groups in order to be able to understand the differences between rich and poor. They will then be able to handle original and replica objects in small groups to try and identify what they were used for. This is a great session that the children can really get a feel for what the medieval times were like and how people lived.

Medieval Soldier

The children will meet a knight and learn about the hierarchy in medieval time. They will investigate the different clothes, armour and weapons of trained Knights compared to peasants. They will take a look at weapons and then participate in bill drill and marching with a bill hook (a foam one not a real one!).

This combines the medieval Life and Medieval soldier sessions at a discounted price.

Crime and Punishment

The session explores medieval crime and punishment and contrasts to crimes and punishments of modern times. It provides an insight into how hard life was for people during these times, the severity of medieval justice and the difficulties that monarchs had maintaining social order and control.

Working in groups and using historic documented cases during from the medieval period, students are encouraged to use their reasoning, enquiry and analytical skills to form decisions and build a case for either the defence or prosecution.

Curriculum links

Understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups and the challenges of their time.

Citizenship at Key Stage 3: Develop pupils’ understanding of democracy, government and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Pupils should use and apply their knowledge and understanding whilst developing skills to research and interrogate evidence, debate and evaluate viewpoints and present reasoned arguments.

Tudor Life

The children will have an in-depth look at the Tudor period. They will look at the contrast between rich and poor clothes and discuss the different jobs undertaken in a Tudor Household. They will then be able to handle original and replica objects in small groups to try and identify what they were used for. This is a great session that the children can really get a feel for what the Tudor times were like and how people lived.
